don't waste my time

It pushed a button

I guess I have returned to blogging. I continued a little bit on myspace. I have decided to vent about our first seminar speaker for the quarter. I don't remember his name, but he seemed to give a pretty good presentation. However, I was informed that he released some verbal vomit at the round table discussion. According to Ty and Mer, he said something to the effect of, "Unlike writing, design takes skill." Part of me really wishes I had been there because I would have said something. On the other hand it's probably good that I wasn't, I'm sure my words and actions would have been frowned upon. To say writing doesn't take skill, is to say all those English classes that were taught throughout your life is a waste. I guess everyone is just born with the ability to write. Everything in life takes some kind of skill. Driving a car, dancing, poker, and mixing a good martini takes skill. I didn't realize such ignorance existed today in the advertising agencies.

Um...who was this tool? I'd have loved to have been there for that.

There's always been this idea, just under the surface that anyone with the manual dexterity to hold a pen can be considered a "writer." I mean, how hard can it BE to string nouns and verbs together...you don't need any extra equipment (like expensive software or a book of pantone chips), and everyone knows how to do it anyway, right?

Yeah. Right.

The only consolation is that today, with easier access to desktop publishing programs, bootleg copies of illustrator and flash in easy reach, and the proliferation of fast, powerful home computers, there's now a LOT more "if you can move a mouse around in photoshop you can be a "designer" going on out there too.

Re: every web site designed by somebody's brother who just got a copy of Photoshop.

If the speaker really said that, he's just running scared. As he should be.
